Capturing America's Manifesto

It was an honor to do a deep dive into the short film "America's Manifesto" by DMV native Anthony McBarnette. Capturing the flaws and iniquities of the American system that is being covered by the veil of modern media, 'America's Manifesto' accurately depicts the implications of our society.

BLQ Vision had the opportunity to speak with McBarnette about his vision behind creating the short film. Read our conversation below to tap into the creative mind of the short film.

What was the inspiration behind this short film?

I was working at a college basketball game and, this choir sang the national anthem, as is the tradition before all sporting events. It sounded so majestic but, the images that popped in my head were polar opposite to the feelings the song brought about. I got goosebumps. I knew what that meant... It's time to create.

What are your hopes for the success of America's Manifesto?

I just hope people feel things. I try to remain egoless when it comes to people's reactions but hopefully, they feel something and that's always a starting point.

The visual themes you covered/highlighted in the short film were perfect depictions of America. What would be the antithesis to this film?

The news, superhero movies, just media, and entertainment in general. There are discussions that we need to have that we are just not having. It's deeper than right and wrong/good and bad.

What is the science behind piecing/curating together content to create a thought-provoking media project?

For me, it's all feeling! From the music to what visuals go where and how long it stays on the screen. I'm inspired and throughout the process, I hold that feeling and create from that space.

What is America’s Manifesto?

It's pride. It's a strong belief in oneself. I see our beliefs as being based on domination and aggression rather than innovation and service. We have an opportunity to create but we would rather control.

"By no means is America's Manifesto an expression of hate for this country but a process of healing. In order to heal you must first become aware of what is broken or needs improvement and that is a discussion that needs to be magnified in order to gain real traction in the progression of this country."
