Why Am I So Toxic? And All of The Other Questions Serena Isioma Asks While "The Leo Sun Sets"

During a time when respectability politics downplays the genre of R&B, Isioma breaks that stigma with her new album/EP “The Leo Sun Sets”. Serena Iseoma redefines bedroom pop with a cross-pollination of R&B/Soul but still has no place to fit anywhere. I appreciate seeing a woman of color in these spaces that are not necessarily dominated by folks that look like us. Her music naturally attracts a captivating and colorful audience.

With a rare essence that invokes a pop/alternative influence, Serena Isiomas’ vocal presence allows her to create her own unique melody -- an attempt that many artists try to execute but sadly fail at doing. You can find these pockets in several tracks (also my favorites) from the 2020 EP.

“Blue Skies” gives listeners a look and listen through the younger generation's lens. A fresh new perspective of self-awareness, sexuality, and identity. The authenticity behind Blue Skies makes this an enjoyable track but also gives you a moment to self-reflect. If music can cause you to self-reflect, then you my friend, have come across a classic project.

“Why am I So Toxic” plays into the frank and upfront question that many of us need to tap in and act on. I appreciate she/her transparency and I feel as though that through this moment of self-awareness to create “The Leo Sun Sets”, that was a question Isioma continuously asked herself. Don’t worry hun, you are not alone.

Meadows In Japan - The deep cuts and unique breakdown that supersedes the uniqueness of an early-era Drake voicemail, Meadows In Japan is a beautiful melody encompassing a realistic juxtaposition towards relationships. I can’t help but to analyze Meadows In Japan being that it’s my favorite track on the album aside from Blue Skies. Meadows In Japan is a bright painting of the highs and lows that come with wanting to be with someone but not knowing if you are healed or in the best mental space to fulfill the needs of that person. So what’s the best thing you can do….Sabotage the relationship before it gets too far. Geez….Why is this song sot toxic?
